The Effects of Driving Elderly Men in Rural Areas on Depression and Social Activities

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of driving status of elderly men in rural areas on depression and social activities. For the purposes of this study, we used the 2014 Survey of the Living Conditions of the Elderly in Korea. This study used Propensity Score Matching(PSM) to match the results from Survey of the Living Conditions of the Elderly in Korea and used OLS regression analysis to prove the relationship between whether rural elderly men drive or not affects depression and social activities. In total data, 453 elderly people who were driving among 3,324 rural male elderly were selected as the target group. Among the 2,871 elderly who did not drive as a comparison group, 293 people who set Caliper and removed unmatched cases were subjected to propensity score matching. According to results, rural elderly who were driving showed statistically higher levels of social activity and lower levels of depression than those who did not drive. This study elucidates that driving status of elderly men in rural areas has positive effects on social activities and depression. The relationship between depression and social activities in the rural elderly analyzed in this study is as follows.
